Elders and Deacons: Recognition and Responsibility

The church is first the one people of God in Christ. The primary living out of this oneness is as siblings who love one another as Jesus commands. From among this congregation of siblings, some exhibit wisdom, a heart for service, and a character that reflects Jesus. These siblings are recognized by the congregation as Elders or Deacons. Their demeanor starts and finishes with Christlikeness. They are characterized by integrity born of the alignment of their inner life and outer life with the truth of Scripture. Such leaders show wisdom and a deep dedication to relationships with fellow believers in the community. In response, the congregation supports them with love and partnership. In turn, the Elders and Deacons honor their responsibilities to lead and listen.

Question to Consider: In your specific congregation, what would this look like?
